Guidance – Intrusive Maintenance
[Editorial Note: This guidance is an embryonic draft initially developed to guide a sand blasting activity being planned in February 2014. Its further refinement, and extension to address additional related areas such as Spray Painting, Noise Abatement etc, is anticipated over time.]
It is a policy of the WNBC to protect the environment. Current guidance is to be found in the club’s publication “WNBC–PS1 – Policy – Environmental Protection”.
With specific reference to Intrusive Maintenance activity that can potentially impact others, it is a policy of the WNBC to protect the welfare of other club members, their guests and members of the public together with the protection of their assets.
Guidance on Intrusive Maintenance activity follows.
Authorisation to undertake
This activity shall not be undertaken without prior agreement by the committee. Final permission to proceed on the day will be provided by the Slip Master.
Specialist Support
Only persons experienced in undertaking sand blasting in marine contexts are to be contracted by club members. Such contractors will be fully conversant with current law and regulations governing this work. Such contractors will be fully equipped for and use practices that comply with these requirements.
Liability Insurance
Contracted persons are to maintain current Public Liability Insurance for a minimum of $10,000,000 throughout their period of engagement. Evidence of such is to be provided to the committee in advance of work commencing.
Certifications / Proficiencies required by law
Evidence of any Certifications / Proficiencies etc required by law in order to perform the work proposed is to be provided to the committee in advance of work commencing.
Sand Blasting shall only occur in a location authorised by the Slip Master. As a general rule, this will be towards the north-east corner of the yard furthest away from the clubrooms.
Sand Blasting shall only occur when the weather is suitable for this activity. Of particular concern is the strength, direction and variability of the wind. As a general rule, the wind strength should be no more than moderate, relatively steady and blowing from the south through west. Any additional requirements provided by the Slip Master are to be followed.
Ideally, no other boat should be present in the yard. If a small number are concurrently present, the disposition of the other boats relative to the boat to be sand blasted is at the discretion of the Slip Master.
Sand Blasting shall not occur:
· when there are many people present in the yard (social occasions, working bees, fishing club meetings etc);
· during slipping;
· during other boat movement around the yard; and
· concurrent with maintenance activity by other members that may be impacted.
